About Portable Hard Drives

A hard drive or hard disk drive is a magnetic storage device installed inside a computer and used as a permanent storage for data. Hard drives have drive motors designed to spin magnetic platters and drive the heads and these are enclosed within a protective casing. The hard drive usually contains the operating system and applications and is often configured as the first drive in the boot sequence. In order to increase your computer’s storage capacity you can install multiple hard disks.

In order to communicate with the computer the hard drive requires an interface and the commonly used ones are Integrated Drive Electronics and Small Computer System Interface. Other interfaces are Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics, Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment and Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. These interfaces are differentiated by the number of pins they have on their connectors.

The installation of a hard drive involves two procedures. The first is partitioning and it is the dividing of the hard drive into logical areas. There is primary partitioning, active partitioning and extended partitioning. In primary partitioning the first partition is created and it cannot be sub divided further with only four primary partitions being allowed in a hard disk. The active partition is used by the operating system to boot up the machine and can be sub divided into smaller sectors or logical drives. The extended partition uses up the remaining space and can be divided into smaller sections called logical drives. The second procedure is formatting and is done to prepare the file system in a partition for use.

Because it has moving parts the hard drive is prone to wearing off and this could lead to loss of data and it would be wise to back up one’s data elsewhere.

New technology has seen the introduction of the External hard drive that uses the external ports as an interface. These are the Universal Serial Bus port, the Fire Wire port and the Parallel port. These have proved to be God sent as they are portable and can store large volumes of data without the risk of losing data as they are not connected to the computer at all times but only when necessary. One can also keep their data safe from prying eyes and sabotage. These days it is not only computers that use hard disks but some camcorders have adopted the technology instead of tapes that are fragile and lose quality when erased.
