Choose suitable external hard drive

This Page is for helping you to find best portable hard drives  for yourself.

An external hard drive is basically the storage exchanged data between computers. An external hard drive fulfills many purposes including data backups, large files storage and also has a capacity of storing thousands of photographs. A right type of external hard drive should be chosen depending on its compatibility with the compatibility.

There are two types of external drive types. They are an empty case and the other is pre-installed version.

Pre-installed:

Pre-installed is a common form. The enclosure includes hardware, power supply and a hard drive.

Few things to keep in mind while choosing it are discussed below:

Size

Usually there are two sizes available 3.5inches and 2.5 inches. The one which is smaller is more portable and light weight whereas the bigger one is less portable. But the smaller one is expensive as compared to the bigger one.2.5 inches are recommended as serves the needs better.

Capacity

As external hard disk is only acts as a transitional storage medium so you do not require much capacity. There storage capacity ranges from 500GB – 3 TB. But the capacity ranging from 1TB to 2TB is fine for normal use. The price depends upon the storage capacity you opt for the more the storage capacity is the more the price is. It is cost effective when opted for more storage capacity.

Interface

Attention should be paid to the USB interface as it comes in two kinds. An external hard disc can also be regarded as used interface.USB2.0 and USB3.0 are the two specifications available.USB3.0 can transfer the data at a much faster rate. The price is a little high.

There are some problems which may occur while using it so to avoid them please do remember the situations.

The USB connection cable should be short. These USB cables also act as power lines. They are not only simple transmission lines. The data inference and the resistance increases with increase in the length of cable connection.

This hinders the proper functioning of the external hard disk. Preference should be given connecting the USB interference which is behind the chassis.

The USB interference should be closed when the USB connections are unplugged. When high speed is operational it may cause damage to the hard disc.

Three types of connections are available. They are disused below:

USB

Most of the enclosures support USB 3.0.Its main drawback is the power PCs(Mac) cannot boot them .They can only use these drives.

Mac (Intel based) can boot from the USBs devices. The Only concern is the power backup.

FireWire

Macs generally have a built in Fire wire support. External Fire wire can be rated as a universal choice because they work both Intel as well as for Power Pc. Fire wire is available in two forms i.e. Fire wire 400 and fire wire 800.Out of these two Fire wire is much faster.

eSAZA

It’s a new connection method. At present it’s not directly supported by Mac. An adapter is required for the connection.
