I purchased one of these recently, the first one did not seem to work so I exchanged it for the same. I had the same problem, it would work on and off. I now suspect the supply power from my USB circuit in my computer cannot keep up with the drive. I tried it in other computers and it works fine. One possible solution I will be trying is putting a powered usb hub between this unit and my computer. I have to say other than this it works great, and otherwise works on the rest of my computers.

I bought my last hard drive (for backups) about 9 months ago and it stopped working when I dropped it from about 2 feet. I had it resting on my laptop and it had no rubber grips. It was tiny and I was always extremely afraid I might break it. I upgraded to this and it also doesn’t seem super hardy. It’s small, and in that regard it is portable, but I would not trust it. If you really are moving something a lot, go for one of the more expensive hard drives that has rubber cushioning all around it, like Lacie’s Rugged drive. But this has a HUGE amount of capacity for the size and price, so it works for me. I may find some way to keep it from sliding around though, in case I accidentally hit it sometime.
Also, it doesn’t use the traditional USB to External port, so its cord is not interchangeable with other hard drives (I had a really long one that I liked because I could put the hard drive far from my work area, but this one won’t work with that cord).
